Lady Amritbai Daga College for Women of Arts, Commerce and Science and Smt. Ratnidevi Purohit College of Home Science and Home Science Technology popularly known as L.A.D. & Smt. R.P. College for Women, Nagpur, is one of the well-established institutions for women’s higher education in Central India. The college was founded on 22 April 1932 with Rao Bahadur M.B. Kinkhede as the Founder President, Shri Y.M. Pathak as the Founder Secretary and Smt. Ramabai Tambe as its first Principal. For more than nine decades, the institution has contributed to the educational, social and cultural development of women.

The college is managed by the Women’s Education Society, a philanthropic organisation committed to providing quality education to women. The Society provides educational opportunities ranging from early childhood education to doctoral research in varied fields. It has developed a strong foundation in women’s empowerment and also promotes multidisciplinary learning and research.

The college has two well-designed campuses and provides facilities that support academic learning as well as student life. Its infrastructure includes a spacious Wi-Fi-enabled library, smart classrooms, computer laboratories, fully equipped auditoriums, hostel facilities, sports facilities, a gymnasium, a digital media centre, canteen, common room, stationery shop and on-campus photocopy facility. The college also has Hari Bhari, a green mindfulness space for students.

Vision and Mission

The vision of the college is to develop the institution into a reputed centre of academic excellence and to empower women through higher learning and research. It aims to provide dynamic and value-based education for developing global competency and strength of character. The mission of the institution is to foster higher education in women and thereby enlighten and empower them. Thus, women’s education and empowerment have remained the central focus of the institution since its establishment.

The college has a strong academic standing and a consistent record of quality education. It has been accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC in all four accreditation cycles, reflecting its sustained commitment to academic excellence and institutional quality. It was also recognised by the UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence. The college has highly qualified and experienced faculty members and regularly produces university merit holders. Campus placements, industry linkages, certificate courses, soft-skills training and various student-support activities further strengthen its academic environment.

L.A.D. College offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes. Its major academic areas include Commerce and Management, Humanities, Science and Technology, Home Science, Applied Electronics and Software Technology, Interior Design, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, and Cosmetic Technology. The Faculty of Commerce and Management offers B.Com., B.B.A., B.C.C.A. and M.Com. programmes and focuses on areas such as finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, internships, industrial visits and career-oriented training. The Faculty of Humanities provides education in languages, social sciences and arts, including subjects such as Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, History, Geography, Music and Philosophy. The Science programmes include disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Electronics. Students are encouraged to develop analytical skills, scientific thinking and practical knowledge through laboratories, field visits, workshops and research-oriented activities.

The college also promotes advanced research through its Research Centres in the Departments of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (HMCT), Cosmetic Technology and Human Development. These centres provide opportunities for doctoral research and encourage interdisciplinary studies, innovation and academic growth. Through these research facilities, the college further strengthens its commitment to higher learning and research among women.

The college also gives importance to professional and career-oriented education. Home Science includes Food Science and Nutrition, Human Development, Textile and Clothing, Family and Resource Management and Extension Education. The Department of Hotel Management and Catering Technology provides theoretical as well as practical training and offers an AICTE-approved four-year degree programme, postgraduate education and a Ph.D. programme. The department also has a Research Centre approved by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University.

Student development goes beyond classroom teaching. The college has active NCC and NSS units, Training and Placement Cell, Samadhan Counselling Cell, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Health Awareness Cell and Students’ Quality Assurance Cell. Students participate in seminars, workshops, certificate courses, cultural activities, sports, community service and skill-development programmes. AURA, the intercollegiate cultural fest, and the “Miss LAD” Personality Contest are important features of campus life. Various clubs related to books, fitness, nature, films and electoral literacy provide additional opportunities for the overall development of students.
